The door was pulled open before Will could knock, giving him a hazy first impression of gold-colored jeans and a straw-colored shirt, of long dark hair waving freely around a heart-shaped face....
“Would you come inside for a minute?” Krista asked, turning so quickly that he didn’t have time for more than a hurried nod.
He followed her inside, forcing himself to move slowly. She’d agreed to go out with him, and the last thing he wanted to do was break his leg tripping over his own two feet. She’d paced to the far side of the room, as jumpy as a cat on hot bricks. Will couldn’t help wondering why.
He’d thought about her late into the night, and woke up in a drowsy tangle of sheets this morning so consumed by desire that he could barely move. Last night his invitation to go sight-seeing had come out of left field. Her acceptance this morning had come out of the blue.
Glancing around the living room at all the textures Krista loved, he tried to think of some way to put her at ease. “Where’s Tommy?”
“He went down the street to show one of the boys in his class his new baseball glove,” she replied. “I’m hoping that new ball glove will break the ice and they’ll strike up a friendship. He’ll be back in a few minutes, so we don’t have much time to talk.”
Will wasn’t sure he liked the seriousness in her expression or in her voice. When her smile had lit up her eyes last night, he thought he’d seen stars. It had reminded him of her belief in his abilities to reach for the stars. Suddenly, it had seemed as if she was the star he was reaching for. That’s when he’d blurted out his invitation to go sight-seeing. At the time, he’d been worried that he was moving too fast. He didn’t want to rush her, but he wasn’t used to taking things slowly.
“What do you want to talk about?” he asked.
“I think we need to set up a few more ground rules.”
More ground rules. Great. He didn’t want to set up ground rules. He wanted to stroll with her down to her bedroom and take up where his dreams had left off.
Gazing at her across the small room, he felt as if he were facing a pitcher who knew his swing by heart. That’s when it dawned on him. Krista thought she knew exactly what he was going to do. She expected him to rush in and try to sweep her off her feet, straight onto her back.
For the first time since she’d opened the door, his thoughts cleared and the thread of a plan began to form in his mind. Of course she expected him to rush her. It’s what the men in her life had always done. Hell, he knew she’d been hurt, terribly hurt. He wanted to tell her he wouldn’t hurt her for the world.
“Mind if I sit down?” he asked.
She nodded, and
